Wrong Turn, Right Place: How a Camping Fail Led Us to Paradise

The GT club members relax outside their tents in the morning sun.

We, the Glacial Trails Club, a band of adventure-hungry buddies were itching for a camping trip to Brenwar (Budgam) in Kashmir. We were all pumped, seven friends ready to rough it out in the wilderness. Here’s the kicker: none of us had a clue what we were in for.

Before I jump into our camping tales, let me introduce the GT Club members. I’m Aamir Sharief, also known as Trek Mentor, leading the squad alongside adventurers Syed Tehseen, Syed Aasif, Syed Waseem, Syed Basit, Syed Mutahar, and Mohammad Abrar. Knowing that two of our doctors quartet not being seasoned trekkers, we opted for a beginner-friendly camping trip in a readily accessible location.

We set off on a Sunday afternoon (June 9, 2024), three cars full of eager campers. Each member departed from a different location to meet at our destination. Since none of us had been to Brenwar before, we were winging it. But as we neared our destination, whispers of disappointment filled the air. Locals warned us Brenwar wasn’t ideal for camping. Let’s just say, their reviews of Brenwar weren’t exactly glowing. Apparently, it was more of a jumping-off point for treks to stunning meadows like Hajin than a camping paradise. Not ideal.

Meet Syed Asif & Syed Basit: Our occasional adventurers!

But hey, we’re adventurers, right? We decided to roll with the punches and find a better spot further along. However, Syed Basit’s recent leg injury limiting his trekking ability made that a no-go. So hardcore trekking was out. Time to hit the brakes and switch to Plan B!

After a quick huddle, we decided on Yousmarg, a beautiful meadow on the other side. We fired off messages to the others, letting them know about the change in plans. Yousmarg turned out to be a sweet little place, not too big, not too small, with stunning meadows and perfect as a base camp for some amazing treks like Nilnag, Trusar Lakes, Liddermad and Bargah meadows.

Yousmarg's glistening artificial lake enhances its scenic charm.

This place is also situated in Budgam district, boasts easy accessibility with two routes converging near Kanidajan. The stretch from Srinagar involves the Char-e-Shareef route, while Pulwama visitors take the straight shot on Pakharpora road.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, we set up our three tents by a serene lake bordering the meadow. Unpacking commenced, got a fire crackling, and the aroma of sizzling Rista and Kabab, Kashmiri delicacies from the famed Wazwan cuisine, bubbling away in a pot filled the air. Hot food and steaming Nun Chai completed this picture-perfect scene in the cool mountain setting- what more could you ask for?

Syed Waseem & Syed Tehseen: The dynamic duo keeping the club running.

The real magic unfolded when we laid out mats for stargazing. Hiking and sleeping bags provided headrests for our reclined positions, with a quilt spread over our legs. Beneath a sky dusted with diamonds, we delved into deep conversations about societal issues, punctuated by puffs from a blueberry-scented hookah that filled the air with its sweet fragrance. It was perfect.

By 9:30 PM, our stomachs rumbled again, and we whipped up a satisfying rice and chicken dinner with a side of salad. The mountain chill soon sent shivers down our spines, prompting a retreat to the warmth of our tents. Following a tradition on such trips, we ended the night with a warm cup of lemon tea before snuggling into our sleeping bags. We made sure everything was tucked away safely outside the tents – you don’t want curious critters as midnight visitors!

The next morning, the sun’s gentle rays roused us from our slumber. A crisp morning breeze greeted us after a restful sleep. A quick wash-up, and then a delightful breakfast awaited. Then came the highlight: a memorable 2 km walk around the picturesque lake. The tranquility of the mountains was palpable.

Sunshine & Shade: The perfect lakeside stroll.

Mornings and evenings in the mountains are pure peace. We used this quiet time to reconnect with nature, clear our heads, and maybe even find answers to some of life’s big questions. Feeling refreshed, we returned to camp for some fruits and freshly squeezed lemonade before heading off to explore the famous Doodhganga River, the main attraction in Yousmarg.

Located roughly 1.5 km from the bus stop, the river offers pony rides for those who prefer to avoid the walk. Two of our members opted for the equestrian experience, while the rest of us embraced the scenic walk.

A simmering cup of soup by the riverbank was the perfect prelude to a refreshing dip in the icy water. Cameras captured the moment, and after a while of soaking up the beauty, we made our way back to the upper meadow. A delicious lunch of chicken and mutton keema with bread fueled us for the journey back. With full bellies and hearts brimming with memories, we packed up our camping gear and said goodbye to this haven.

Fire met ice! Hot soup fueled us for a dip in the frigid Doodhganga.

As much as we were loving our escape into nature, reality called. The pull of home, with its responsibilities and routines, awaited. Packing up camp was bittersweet, but the memories we made would forever be etched in our minds. So, even though our Brenwar plan went a bit sideways, Yousmarg turned out to be an incredible adventure, filled with breathtaking sights, delicious food, and amazing company. And that, my friends, is what makes a camping trip truly unforgettable!
